Purpose of the catalogue
The IYEWE Public Domain Literature Library provides editorial notes and reading guides for public-domain texts. The catalogue aims to help readers approach historical works with informed attention to structure, theme, and context. It is not a scholarly edition but a practical companion for general readers.
Scope and selection
The catalogue currently includes 99 works, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selection is based on a mix of canonical and lesser-known titles, with an emphasis on works that reward close reading and offer thematic variety. The catalogue does not claim to represent the entire public domain; it is a curated list reflecting the editorial interests of the catalogue project.
Source attribution
All texts are drawn from Project Gutenberg, a digital library of works in the public domain. Each book record includes the original publisher, translator, illustrator, and other contributors as listed by Project Gutenberg. The catalogue does not verify copyright status beyond the information provided; readers should consult local laws for their jurisdiction.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes title, author(s), original publication date (where available), Publisher, subject keywords, target-reader field, and a catalogue note. The keywords are taken directly from Project Gutenberg subject headings. The catalogue note is an original editorial commentary that does not summarise the entire book but highlights structural and thematic features observed in excerpts.
Category assignment
Works are assigned to one of four categories based on thematic resonance and intended readership. Categories are navigation aids, not definitive literary judgments. A work may contain elements that fit multiple categories; the assignment reflects the primary emphasis of the catalogue note.
Editorial reading context
The catalogue notes are based on careful reading of excerpts from each work, not necessarily the entire text. The notes focus on authorial choices in diction, dialogue, description, narrative voice, and structure. They do not claim to be comprehensive or definitive interpretations.
Edition facts and text measurements
Edition facts (e.g., publisher, translator) are taken from the Project Gutenberg metadata. Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information. The catalogue notes may comment on length or pacing informally but do not quantify.
Recommendations and related works
Each category guide recommends three works for first reading. Recommendations are based on how well the catalogue note illustrates the category's focus. Related works are occasionally suggested within notes but are not exhaustive.
Corrections and reader reports

The catalogue is updated periodically as new works are added or existing notes revised. the catalogue project welcomes feedback and will make corrections as needed. There is no fixed schedule for updates.
